How long should you study for the CPC exam?

AAPC says most people complete the coursework and pass the exam in 4 to 8 months. If your coding course is already done, our recommendation is 6 to 8 weeks of focused exam prep: book navigation, timed practice at 2.4 minutes per question, and drills on the areas that cost you points.

What decides how long you need

The 6 to 8 week range is our recommendation for exam prep after a course, not an AAPC rule. Three things move it:

  • Your coding background. Working coders often need speed and test strategy more than content.
  • How fast you are in the books. The CPC is open book, so lookup speed decides whether you finish 100 questions in 4 hours.
  • The code year. Exams switch to the new code set every January. Studying on 2026 books for a 2027 exam means relearning changes. See CPC exam books.

An 8 week CPC prep plan

  1. Week 1: baseline. One timed practice set. Note your score, your pace and your three weakest areas.
  2. Weeks 2 to 3: book setup. Tab and annotate your books within AAPC's rules, and practice finding codes fast.
  3. Weeks 4 to 5: weak areas. Work only on the sections and guidelines that cost you points in week 1.
  4. Week 6: timed blocks. 25 questions in 60 minutes, again and again, until the pace feels normal.
  5. Week 7: full exams. 100 questions in 4 hours under exam conditions, reviewing every miss.
  6. Week 8: final check. Book the exam when you finish on time and stay above 70% with room to spare.

Know you're ready for the CPC before you book your date

PassPulse trains you for the CPC under real exam time pressure. Exam style questions on every section, every answer explained, and a readiness score that tells you when you're ready.

Start preparing for the CPC

Is 2 weeks enough for the CPC?

Only if you already code every day and your timed practice is already passing. Two weeks is enough to sharpen pace and book navigation, not to learn the code sets. If your first timed practice is well under 70%, give yourself more time: the voucher is valid for a year, so there's no need to rush.

How to know you're ready

You're ready when full timed practice exams end above 70% with a margin, and you finish all 100 questions with time to spare. Read how hard the CPC is for a checkpoint plan for exam day.

Book the CPC when your timed scores say you're ready, not when the calendar does.

CPC FAQ

Can you pass the CPC in 2 weeks?

Only if you already have strong coding experience and your timed practice is passing. Most candidates need several weeks of exam prep after their course.

How many hours a day should I study for the CPC?

Consistency beats length. One to two focused hours a day, with regular timed blocks, is a solid routine.

When should I schedule the CPC exam?

When your timed practice is safely above 70%. Remember the annual blackout from December 30 and the January code set switch.
