How long should you study for the CRCST?

HSPA doesn't set a study time. For self-study with the 9th edition Technical Manual, our recommendation is 6 to 10 weeks; if you already work in sterile processing, the low end is realistic. After HSPA approves your application you have 120 days to sit the exam, so plan your study around that window.

What decides how long you need

The 6 to 10 week range is our recommendation, not an HSPA rule. It moves with:

  • Whether you work in SPD. Daily practice makes processes familiar; the exam still tests the numbers and standards behind them.
  • The three big domains. Cleaning, Preparation and Packaging, and Sterilization are 63% of the exam.
  • Your timeline. You have 120 days from application approval to test, and the 400 hours of hands-on experience can be finished within 6 months after you pass.

An 8 week CRCST plan

  1. Week 1: baseline. A timed practice set and a skim of the whole manual.
  2. Weeks 2 to 3: Cleaning, Decontamination and Disinfection.
  3. Week 4: Preparation and Packaging.
  4. Weeks 5 to 6: Sterilization Process, including monitoring and the numbers in our CRCST cheat sheet.
  5. Week 7: the smaller domains. Departmental considerations, storage, equipment and professional development.
  6. Week 8: exam pace. 150 questions in 3 hours, then book when you're consistently safe.

Is 2 weeks enough for the CRCST?

Only if you already work in sterile processing and your practice is already passing. Starting from zero, two weeks isn't enough to get through the manual. A failed attempt means a 6 week wait and another $140.

What the exam is built on

HSPA's handbook says the CRCST is referenced against the Sterile Processing Technical Manual (9th edition, 2023), ANSI/AAMI ST79 and the AORN Guidelines. The exam is pass or fail, and your report shows each section as at or above, below or well below the standard.

CRCST FAQ

How long does it take to study for the CRCST?

HSPA doesn't say. We recommend 6 to 10 weeks of self-study with the 9th edition manual, less if you already work in SPD.

Can you self-study for the CRCST?

Yes. HSPA doesn't require a course, and its certification council doesn't develop, require or endorse training materials.

How long do I have to take the CRCST after applying?

120 days from the approval of your application.

Do I need the 400 hours before the exam?

No. You can pass first and complete the 400 hands-on hours within 6 months as a provisional CRCST.
