PTCB preliminary pass: what it means

The pass or fail on screen right after the PTCE is a preliminary result. PTCB says it's typically an indication of your performance but not official. Official score reports are typically in your PTCB Account within 3 weeks, and you're considered certified only once your passing result is official.

Why PTCB makes you wait

PTCB runs quality checks on every exam before results become official, including statistical analysis and a review of candidate comments on exam content. PTCB says it cannot expedite the processing of exam results.

Can a preliminary pass turn into a fail?

PTCB doesn't publish how often a preliminary result changes. What it does say is that the preliminary result is typically an indication of your performance but is not official or final. So the honest answer is: a preliminary pass is good news, but it isn't certification until the official report says so.

Don't tell an employer you're certified until your PTCB Account shows the official pass.

What happens when it's official

  • Your certification becomes active and is verifiable on PTCB's Verify page.
  • You can download your certificate and wallet card from your PTCB Account.
  • You receive an email with instructions to claim your digital badge.
  • If the official result is a fail, you can't reapply until it's posted. Retakes then follow PTCB's waits: 60 days before attempts 2 and 3, 6 months after that.
